Job Description
- Production/Design:
- Create and implement book production files in InDesign 5.5 and Quark 8
- Handle interior and cover production and generate printer-ready files
- Design custom elements for reprints and ebooks, as needed
- Monitor quality of source images and production files to suit printer’s specifications
- Create ancillary marketing materials for sales and marketing, including ads, posters, web banner ads, and PowerPoint presentations
- Ebooks, Apps, and New Media:
- Create PDF files for conversion to epub and other formats
- Provide file delivery and documentation for varied electronic formats (including audio, video and other new media) as needed for publishing partners
- Create derivatives for use with Insight, Look Inside and other online “sneak peek” functionality
- Reprints:
- Implement reprint corrections and adjustments, including updating book production files, generating new barcodes, and rebuilding older titles to current specifications
- Check printer proofs
- Production Archiving/Digital Data Management:
- Maintain electronic production archive
- Provide files when requested (i.e., for foreign rights; authors/publishing partners who need PDF or Word files; images for publicity, etc.)
- Assist with organizational project of creating a comprehensive digital archive structure
- Establish consistent workflow procedures for reprints and archiving
Requirements
- Bachelors degree
- Three to five years’ production experience in book publishing
- Deep knowledge of Quark, InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator for a Mac-based platform
- Skilled in Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook on a Mac-based platform
- Deadline oriented and adept at multitasking
- Proofreading skills
- Superior organizational skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Excellent communications skills
- Solid design skills and sound aesthetic judgment
- Knowledgeable about e-publishing a plus
- Knowledge of North Atlantic Books’ categories is a plus
- This is a full-time position, 40 hours a week. Benefits. 20+ person staff. Pleasant, central Berkeley location is close to public transportation. North Atlantic Books is an EOE.
